Cycling from Strasbourg to Offenburg

On cycleways, mostly dedicated. Easy to ride, the total distance is about 60 km long on a flat surface, mostly on asphalt; only one small segment is on a track and another one on gravel. The North segment to Offenburg is nicer than the South back to Strasbourg via Illkirch.

Not a common Monday

It’s very pleasant to start a new week with a day off. The main reason was to study and to let the repairman in. Then a succession of events occurred:

  • he called me in the early morning and let me know at what time he was going to arrive,
  • I will be going to be on call from this evening on,
  • according to the weather forecast, it was the last sunny day until god knows when,
  • I couldn’t find any interactive way to study on the security frameworks, knowing that passive learning is useless.

Based on all the facts above, I invited some people for an evening BBQ, went out into the forest and rode my mountain bike,  bought some groceries to cook a nice salad, let the repairman fix the dishwasher, started some laundry, went out again to another forest, mowed the lawn, went shopping for BBQ food and finally had my guests.

Tam showed up to fetch his car but unfortunately his battery was flat; since it’s a hybrid car it wasn’t possible to push it. Therefore he stayed with us for dinner until his car could be fixed, which took about 1 minute and costed 100 Euros. At least he could enjoy with us some fish-kebab, grilled mushrooms and other vegetables. It was nice to spend some time with some friends!

Ended the day doing 61 km of activities, including 48 km on my bike. Still 690 km to go this month and 6,428 km this year (7,042 km would be ideal if I can afford not to include non-bike sports as well). Too bad this week I won’t have as much free time than I had for cycling…

Of course my mind wasn’t in security frameworks while mountain biking, but rather organising some games on mountain bikes based on the snake game which could be played in groups in the city centre or in the forest.

So below are the maps of the two rides.

Lunch ride to Diekirch

Today I went to the Meetup event called Lazy Sunday Bike Ride.

The meeting point was in Mersch at 10:15. I left home on time, but went slowly and did a detour via the city centre,  and at 9:44 I saw the sign displaying 15 remaining kilometres, I had to boost and arrived there exactly at 10:15 😉 Of course, I could also have contacted the organiser as I knew the tour details, but that would have been no fun.

The group was great, it was great riding with 12 other people while talking a bit and listening to others – I have two ears and one mouth. One person got lost so I went back to fetch her and we finally found the group back after an hour, and we cycled to Diekirch and stopped for lunch in a Portuguese restaurant named Jardin du Portugal where the food was good so I recommend it.

In total, I cycled another 109 km today, it was called a “Lazy” 😉

I’ve done 412 km of outdoor activities this week, and I still need another 743 km this month to reach my goal, but since I’m going to be on duty next week I won’t be able to cycle as much as last week.

To finish the day, I’ve cleaned the BBQ; it’s like a new one 🙂

Saturday’s MTB ride

Today I went mountain biking. Left home to Grund, Clausen, Neudorf, Kirchberg, Senningerberg, Sandweiler, Hesperange, Leudelange and back home. Another 50 km have been added to my counter 😉

It seems the frog season started and at some point, the path went through a private property:

New month, new challenge

In May days are getting longer. That’s great! I can spend more time outside (since I don’t completely trust my eyesight I’d rather stay close to home at night).

I renew my 1,000 km goal for this month but would like to reach 10,000 km until the end of 2014. This one is going to be tough! I’ve done 3,339 km this year so far; more than 6,600 km remaining – that’s about 27 km every day.

Yesterday I was lazy and it was Labour Day, but I have a good excuse: thunderstorms. Actually, I was getting ready to do 50 km ride when I could hear the thunder; and then I was invited to join some friends for dinner in a great portugese restaurant called Atlantico.

Since I have postponed my cycling tour to today, I’ve extended it a bit, but the slope uphill was tough; cycling against the wind didn’t help.

Despite its difficulty, it was a nice and idyllic ride.

It seems some sections will look different in the future as they are building a road which is going to be a primary road close to the cycling route…

PS: still fine without chocolate, candies nor coke 🙂

Yes! 1002 km!!

I was having some doubts about the weather and work, but I’ve made it! I’m so happy 🙂 Finally, I have cycled 1,002 km this month and 1,205 km of total activities; not bad 🙂 🙂

I cycled back from work via the CR 105 road (also known as Vallée des Sept Chateaux – Valley of the Seven Castles). This route is amazing and I’m wondering why they don’t create a cycling route there; the car traffic is almost inexistent; I’ve been overtaken by only one car (plus a racing bike) along this road. In addition, the landscape is amazing and the way almost flat.

Since it’s a lovely route, let me share it on the map; I’ll try to share some pictures in the future (which should be read: if I do not forget about it, maybe one day, I’ll sort my photos and upload some).

No sweeties and cycling goal

I’ve been abusing of chocolate, candies and other sweeties for over a month; now that Easter is over, I’m going to fast for a week. I really feel I had too much; this also includes soft drinks.

Also, I’m trying to cycle 1,000 km this month and I need another 123 km until Wednesday to make it; and the weather forecast isn’t in my favour.  Fortunately my initial goal has been reached (1,000 km on foot or bike), but It would be icing on the cake :-). We’ll see how it goes.

Being on call sucks

Being on call means being stuck at home, near home, at work or near the office. Especially it’s the third weekend this month… However, I have found a way to ride my mountain bike and stay within acceptable distance in case of call.

I don’t know how long it’s going to take until I have enough doing such tours, but I have to admit that the shape on the map is interesting; maybe I should draw some pictures on the map.

I forgot to mention that I didn’t allow myself to ride multiple times on the same road segment. 🙂
